NSO 2011 Late Night Event: Flavor Tripping with Miracle Berries

Date and Time:

Sunday, September 4, 9-11 p.m. Spaces are limited, so arrive early!

Location:

Houston Hall, Hall of Flags

Information:

Explore the many facets of food. With the ability to make lemonade taste like chocolate shake, the aptly named miracle berry, or Synsepalum dulcificum, is the ideal appetizer to whet your appetite.

As we explain the biochemistry behind how the miraculin in the berries bind to taste buds and cause sour foods to taste sweet temporarily, you will sample different foods and experience this transformation firsthand.

To reflect on the sense of taste and gastronomy, listen to poems read from a variety of cultures and time periods.

Listen to upperclassmen share insights about dining options around Penn and the secrets on how to keep both your brain and body healthy in college.

Discuss the ethical issues such as genetically modified food and sustainable eating practices and introduce the new students to Penn’s efforts in these areas.
